There are RC crawlers, and then there's the Traxxas TRX-4 Land Rover Defender. When Traxxas entered the scale/trail segment with the TRX-4, the benchmark shifted permanently. This Clipless version represents the natural evolution of the model: the same competition-grade engineering, an officially licensed Land Rover body, and a no-clip mounting system that combines clean aesthetics with instant chassis access. Choose from four factory-painted colours — green, grey, tan and red — and pick the Defender that fits your style on the trail.
The TRX-4 Defender's Clipless body uses hidden latches that hold tight on the trail no matter how technical things get, yet release in seconds for quick chassis access. No more lost clips in the field, no more broken tabs, no more visible hardware interrupting the clean lines of the iconic Defender silhouette. The officially licensed Land Rover Defender body includes detailed chrome bumpers, side mirrors, functional spare tyre, jerry cans and a hi-lift jack — every accessory that makes a Defender a Defender, faithfully reproduced in 1/10 scale.
The TRX-4 Defender's portal axles aren't just for show — they're why this crawler clears obstacles where others get stuck. Unlike conventional axles, portal axles place the reduction gear at the wheel hub, lifting the differential housing well above the wheel centreline. The result is dramatically superior ground clearance that turns "no way" into "no problem". Less torque twist, more traction, more stability — the engineering that makes the difference when it counts.
T-Lock™ remote locking differentials are one of the TRX-4's strongest arguments against the competition. From the TQi transmitter you can independently lock or unlock the front and rear differentials while the vehicle is moving — no stopping, no mechanical adjustments. Unlocked for open trail sections with maximum manoeuvrability; locked for technical crawling with full four-wheel drive traction. A level of versatility that few RTR crawlers in this class can match.
The high/low range gearbox makes the TRX-4 Defender a genuinely versatile machine. Drop into low range for maximum torque on technical rock climbs; shift to high for trail runs where speed and momentum do the work. All from the transmitter, without stopping or interrupting the drive.
The TRX-4 Defender ships with fully waterproof electronics as standard: the XL-5 HV ESC, receiver and servo are all sealed against water, mud and dust. Drive through puddles, wet grass and muddy streams without a second thought. The TQi 2.4GHz radio system delivers precise, interference-free response with built-in telemetry capability and upgradability.
The TRX-4's heavy-duty steel frame rails are the foundation everything else is built on — rigid where rigidity matters, articulated where articulation is needed. The oil-filled GTS coil-over shocks feature threaded aluminium bodies for precise ride height adjustment and deliver smooth, consistent damping that keeps all four wheels planted across any terrain. The adjustable wheelbase and dual-fit battery tray add configuration flexibility that few platforms at this price point can offer.
It's the inevitable comparison in the segment. The TRX-4 Defender differentiates itself from the Axial SCX10 in several key areas: portal axles deliver greater ground clearance, T-Lock remote differentials eliminate the need to stop for traction adjustments, and fully waterproof electronics come as standard without needing upgrades. If you're looking for the most complete RTR 1/10 crawler you can buy without opening the bonnet, the TRX-4 Defender is the answer.
The TRX-4 Defender Clipless comes in four factory-painted finishes. Select your colour using the variant selector:
Is the Traxxas TRX-4 Defender Clipless suitable for beginners?
Yes. The TRX-4 is a Ready-To-Run (RTR) vehicle that includes everything needed to drive: radio, ESC, motor and receiver. You only need a battery, charger and 4 AA batteries for the transmitter.
What battery does the Traxxas TRX-4 Defender need?
The TRX-4 accepts 4–7 cell NiMH or 2S–3S LiPo batteries with a Traxxas iD connector. For best performance, a 3S 5000mAh LiPo is recommended.
Can the Traxxas TRX-4 Defender be upgraded?
Yes — and it's one of its biggest strengths. Traxxas's upgrade ecosystem for the TRX-4 is enormous: brushless motors, high-torque servos, Pro Scale LED lighting, alternative tyres and much more.
What's the difference between the standard TRX-4 Defender body and the Clipless version?
The Clipless system replaces conventional body clips with hidden integrated latches. The result is a cleaner exterior line and the ability to remove the body in seconds without tools or loose clips.
